News on Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft

  • GOOG Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt said he can't predict when the online advertising market will pick up. ``Global advertising spend seems to be declining,'' Schmidt said today in an interview with Bloomberg TV. ``No one really knows what this short-term period ahead of us looks like.'' ``We are clearly in a downturn,'' Schmidt said, referring to current economic conditions. ``The situation is much more serious than I had thought.''   • GOOG is in talks w/Hollywood studios about acquiring the rights to offer downloadable movies on YouTube. A GOOG movie site could be up and running within 90 days. [The Guardian]
  • YouTube is expected to announce a deal today w/movie studio M.G.M.; YouTube will now offer MGM movies and TV shows. NYT
  • GOOG CEO Schmidt interviewed by Cramer on Friday's show. Overall says he wasn't surprised that MSFT was talking to Verizon about the mobile search opportunity and thinks the mobile space overall is a tremendous opportunity for everyone involved. [CNBC]
  • GOOG is subletting ~50K sq feet of space at its NYC headquarters. [Silicon Alley Insider]

  • YHOO, MSFT search deal has a very good chance of occurring despite recent comments from MSFT CEO Ballmer that his company wasn't interested in an outright acquisition. A search-only deal is still possible. [New York Post]
  • MSFT may not be 100% serious when it says it has moved on from YHOO and could just be waiting for the company's stock price to drop further before pouncing (say to $8 or so). YHOO has some other options left, like selling its Asian assets and buying back stock. However, MSFT will most likely be playing a role in the co's future. [Barron's]
