Google Says Cyber Monday Retail "Paid Clicks" Up In Double Digits in Several Categories

According to a post on the Google Retail Blog (stats later redacted), “Google paid click volume was also up, year over year, in categories like Department Stores (39%), Books & Magazines (28%), Comparison shopping (25%) and Sports & Fitness (24%). Even categories like Apparel (9%) and Home Furnishings (14%) were up. (Google Internal Data, Category Leaders).” I assume Google removed the numbers because of what it could imply for earnings.

Although just one day, this is definitely an encouraging sign for Google's 4Q earnings prospects in that it shows that consumers are still looking to search online for retail items. This is also positive for Amazon, as the de facto leader in online retail. Google did caution that there are five fewer days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which would imply challenging YoY comps. Wonder how many Wall Street analysts have factored that into their analysis?
