First Google plans to announce plans to release a PowerPoint type application to add to its already existing Word and Excel type applications named Google Docs. The product is expected to allow users to both import to and export to MS PowerPoint. Now IBM is planning to release an Internet package called Symphony the can be downloaded for free and will be included free to customers who buy their Notes software. Yahoo just recently announced the acquisition of Zimbra for $350 million, which targets 1,300+ organizations including universities, and small and medium sized businesses.
Whether these guys can make a dent in Microsoft’s office business is yet to be seen, given Microsoft’s 500 million desktop customers. However, given that the world is moving to the Internet, applications are sure to follow. Hence, Microsoft needs to develop and articulate a strategy here soon. Stay tuned.
